Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette — located at Newton Food Centre — serves one of the better hawker renditions of Teochew or luak (oyster omelette) but it has a slightly “modernised” approach to the dish.
The stall started at Orchard Road Gluttons Square, a popular makeshift night-time area for street hawkers that operated from 1966 to 1978 before shifting into the then-newly built Newton Circus Hawker Centre (as it was previously called) in 1971.
The owner — now in his 80s — has retired and frying duties has been executed by his wife and their 43-year-old son (2021), Issac Lau, for quite a number of years now.
The stall sees constant orders whenever they open at 6pm and while their rendition of or luak is slightly modernised and takes a few shortcuts, it is incredibly well executed and consistent.
